Our Company:

Plymouth Engineering was started in 1990 by its founder, Keith P. Whitaker. The company began as a part-time venture with the purpose of providing professional engineering services to qualified design/build contracting firms as well as to several select local developers. The need for prompt, reasonably priced, professional services in the New England area led an ever-increasing number of clients to Plymouth Engineering. The first office was opened in a converted garage on the founder’s farm. In 1994, part time drafting and engineering help was added to meet the increasing workload. The company opened a small office in downtown Plymouth in 1995. With continued growth, in January 2021, the company relocated to its current offices at 8 Main Street (Triangle Plaza) in Newport, Maine. Over the years, additional full time staff has been added to keep up with the ever-increasing workload. Currently Plymouth Engineering, Inc. has a staff of thirteen including six licensed professionals and support staff

Plymouth Engineering specializes in the fields of civil/site, environmental and building engineering as well as landscape architecture. We provide a full range of services to private, commercial, industrial, governmental, and institutional clients. Our in-house professionals are registered in most New England states, and are familiar with each state’s regulatory programs. Local, State, and Federal environmental permitting is available through Plymouth Engineering as a pre-cursor to final engineering design. Plymouth Engineering enjoys a good working relationship as well as the respect of State and many local review and permitting authorities.

Plymouth Engineering has made a conscious effort to remain a small, quality-based firm. We have avoided the temptation to add personnel as the work load grew, so that the principals of the firm can remain involved with each and every project. We have also established ties with other small-firm engineers, land surveyors, architects, and natural resources specialists. This allows us to provide a wide range of specialized managed services without the costly overhead of large firms.

We hold the following licenses and professional certifications:

  • Professional Engineers in ME, NH, VT, PA
  • Certified Professionals in Erosion and Sedimentation Control
  • Licensed Landscape Architect
  • Certified Planner
  • Certified Environmental Inspector
  • Certified 3rd party Inspector for MUBEC (Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code)

From our clients..

I have been working with Plymouth Engineering both as a contractor and client for many years and I can attest to Plymouth Engineering’s undying commitment to delivering the full value for each and every client! -- Kevin Bowman, President, Bowman Constructors

For the last 18 years, Plymouth Engineering’s experience and willingness to work with our design/build team has made them our go to engineering firm. Whether it’s for civil, structural or architectural, there is no project too big, too small, or too unique for them to tackle. We would be pleased to hire them for any project we have the opportunity to work on. -- Jennifer Bartlett, J. M. Brown General Contractor.

Over the last five years, as Town Manager for the Town of Carmel, I have enjoyed working on different projects and designs with Plymouth Engineering personnel.

Their expertise in designing and cooperation during the bidding and construction process has proven to be invaluable.

This year we are working on a major construction project that will entail placing a box culvert in one of the major waterways in Carmel. Plymouth Engineering’s step-by-step process of working from conception to final design has proven to be very beneficial to me as manager and road commissioner.
-- Tom Richmond, Town Manager, Town of Carmel

We became acquainted with Plymouth Engineering in 2001 when the Town of Brooks was looking to “rehab” a run down, late 1800’s farmhouse and turn it into the town office. The house is right in the center of town and we wanted to keep this wonderful old building. Scott and Keith could not have been more helpful in making our vision come true. We have been told by many that Brooks “has the most beautiful town office in Maine.” Scott has helped us with roads grants, and more recently, helped us build a salt/sand shed working with Maine DOT and DEP. We sincerely appreciate all of Plymouth Engineering’s excellent work on our projects in Brooks! -– Jane McGlaughlin, Town of Brooks, Maine.
